Hogenakkal Falls in May
Tamil Nadu, India
Water levels drop severely in May, reducing the falls to a trickle
May in Hogenakkal is the second skip month of the dry quarter. Daytime 36-38C, nights 26-27C, humidity 60 percent, rainfall under 50mm — mostly as pre-monsoon thunderstorm bursts that don't sustain the upstream catchment. The Cauvery river still runs at 15-20 percent of post-monsoon peak. Mettur dam storage at annual low; the dam doesn't begin August-September releases until the SW monsoon refills the Karnataka-upstream catchment in June-July. The Hogenakkal falls remain at single-channel trickle; the multi-channel Niagara-style spectacle is non-existent. Coracle (parisal) rides at ₹150-300 still operate but only on the narrow remaining channel. The 2,000-year-old oil massage tradition at the river-side ghat continues at ₹300-800 per session — these masseurs depend on the dry-season passing trade for income through April-June. River-bath now uncomfortable due to ambient and water-warmth. Stay limited — TTDC ₹600-1,200. The pre-monsoon thunderstorms hit the last fortnight; brief upstream catchment runoff may show as a 2-3 day flow boost but doesn't produce the multi-channel falls.
