Daksha Mahadev Temple, Kankhal.
Day-tripper itineraries hit Har Ki Pauri Ganga aarti and the Mansa Devi ropeway; Kankhal is 4km off the main drag and doesn't appear on most package tours.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
The temple at Kankhal marks the site where Sati immolated herself in her father Daksha's yagna fire after he insulted Shiva — the foundational story of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The Sati Kund, where she's said to have sat down in the flames, is in the temple courtyard. Far older and quieter than the Har Ki Pauri scrum, this is where the original mythology actually anchors. Best: Year-round; Oct-Mar most pleasant. Maha Shivratri (Feb-Mar) draws local crowds. Avoid Kanwar Mela (Jul-Aug) for chaos.. Reach: 4km south of Haridwar in Kankhal. Auto-rickshaw or e-rickshaw from Haridwar railway station ~Rs 80-150.. Tip: Free entry. Modest dress, bare feet inside the inner sanctum. The Sati Kund is the visual anchor — locals leave offerings there. Combine with the nearby Anandmayi Ma ashram, also in Kankhal. Best between morning and evening aartis to avoid the press of the riverfront..
