Founded 1944 in Karachi by Satish Chona, moved to Ahmedabad after Partition — 81-year-old Gujarat-grown ice cream chain, now under LOTTE Wellfood. The Sector 11 Gandhinagar outlet is the city's reference ice cream parlour. Alphonso mango ice cream in summer is the seasonal must-buy; the brand pioneered the Indian-flavour-on-vanilla-base template most local brands now copy.
Tip: Summer (Mar-Jun) is the mango ice cream window — order the alphonso variant, not the generic mango. Kesar pista kulfi is the year-round must-buy. Avoid the sundae section if you want value; the single-scoop with toppings is the better-priced order.
Signature: Khichdi-kadhi (no onion, no garlic)
The food court inside Swaminarayan Akshardham temple complex — runs on satvik principles (pure-veg, no onion, no garlic, no eggs). Caters to 8,000+ daily visitors during Akshardham peak. The khichdi-kadhi is the order most pilgrims come back for; multi-cuisine layout (North, South, Chinese, fast food) all in the same Swaminarayan dietary restriction. Cleanest food-court hygiene in Gandhinagar.
Tip: Akshardham (and Premvati) is closed on Mondays and the temple closes at 7pm — plan around that. Avoid the 1-2pm lunch rush. Khichdi-kadhi is the signature; everything else is good-for-a-food-court but unremarkable. No cash-card at counters; the temple uses a prepaid card system.
Signature: Buffet brunch with live counters
28-acre 4-star resort on GIDC Sector 25 — 199 rooms, golf course on site, multi-cuisine restaurant with pool-side seating. The Sunday brunch buffet is the city's reference brunch destination for state-government and Mahatma Mandir / business-traveller crowds. Wins where Premvati doesn't (alcohol-free is still the city default but Cambay caters to corporate guests).
Tip: Sunday brunch (11am-3pm) is the value play — buffet covers brunch and lunch, kitchen runs sharpest. Reservations required for weekend dinner. Skip the European section; the tandoor and Indian counters are stronger. Pool-side dinner in winter is the best seat in the house.
Signature: Multi-cuisine thali and Indo-Chinese
Sector 16 is Gandhinagar's central restaurant cluster (opposite GH 5 government building); Mary Gold is one of the trusted multi-cuisine anchors there. State-government office lunches drive 60%+ of weekday traffic. The Gujarati thali is competently done, not exceptional; the value is the working-day convenience and the parking.
Tip: Weekday lunch (1-2:30pm) is the rush — go before or after. The Gujarati thali is the order if you only have one meal here; the multi-cuisine sections are good-not-great. Skip on Sundays — half the city's open eateries are closed and Mary Gold's quality drops with the rush.
Signature: Masala dosa and uttapam
Sankalp is the Gujarat-grown South Indian chain — Sector 16 Gandhinagar outlet is the default 'south indian here?' answer in the planned-city sector layout. Dosa-uttapam-idli served at a price point that pulls government-employee lunch crowds and student groups from Gujarat National Law University.
Tip: Lunch (12-3pm) gets the freshest batter. The mysore masala dosa is the second-most-ordered dish — slightly spicier than the standard masala. Skip the Indo-Chinese section; the kitchen is calibrated for South Indian only.
