Dudhwa National Park in September
Uttar Pradesh, India
September's monsoon tail drops Dudhwa's rainfall to 200-250mm. The park remains closed but the forest department begins pre-opening preparations. Water levels start receding, grasses reach their maximum 4-5 metre height, and the wildlife is hidden but thriving.
The September story
Still closed. The forest department conducts pre-season maintenance: clearing roads, repairing rest houses, checking watchtowers. The grasslands are so tall that even elephants disappear inside them. Water still stands in most marshes. Late September sometimes sees the first controlled burns to manage grassland height for the November opening. If you are in Lakhimpur Kheri, the surrounding countryside is green beyond description — but Dudhwa itself is off-limits.
