Created secretly by Nek Chand starting 1957 using broken bangles, bottles, tiles, electrical waste. Discovered in 1975. Now 40 acres of surreal recycled art.

The least-visited section of Rock Garden has the most surreal installations — recycled glass mosaics, bottle-cap walls, and a miniature village made entirely of broken bangles.
This is where the city was actually drawn. Original sketches, the city plan in Corbusier's hand, scale models of the Open Hand monument, and personal photographs from the 1951-65 commission years. Free entry, 10am-4:30pm Tuesday to Sunday. Combine with the Sector 10 Government Museum and Art Gallery - same architect, walking distance, contains the Gandharan and miniature painting collections originally meant for the Lahore Museum but partitioned to Chandigarh in 1947.
Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret designed the building itself in 1968 — concrete columns, double-height halls, top-light slots that were a working diagram of his Chandigarh ideas. Inside sit 627 Gandhara sculptures (one of the largest single collections in the world) and roughly 4,000 Pahari and Rajasthani miniatures, with second-century stone Buddhas a few rooms away from a long Pahari Gita Govinda series. Best: October to March, weekday mornings to avoid school groups. Reach: Sector 10-C, on the museum-and-gallery axis next to the Punjab Kala Bhawan; 10 minutes by auto from Sector 17 plaza, walkable from Rose Garden. Tip: Closed Mondays and national holidays; ticket ₹10, camera ₹5 (cash); allow at least 90 minutes for the Gandhara hall alone..

Signature: wok-fried chicken with Schezwan sauce
Taj Chandigarh's Schezwan-led Chinese specialty restaurant — split-level dining room with filigreed objet d'art and panelled fabric walls, attached private dining room and bar. The fine-dining Chinese benchmark for the city.
Tip: Dinner-only (7:30-11pm). Skip the standard dim sum platter and order the seasonal hotpot — the kitchen does it stronger than the regular menu suggests.
Signature: house weissbier with smoked chicken platter
Chandigarh's first microbrewery — Sector 26 institution that brought house-brewed Weissbier, Premium Lager, Dunkel and a Special Brew to a city that until then drank only bottled. Set the template every Chandigarh brewpub since has copied.
Tip: Order the brewmaster's flight (four 150ml glasses) before committing to a full pint; the Dunkel is the dark-malt house signature most regulars settle on.
Signature: filter coffee with masala dosa
Chandigarh outpost of India's worker-owned coffee co-operative, sat near Neelam Cinema. White-uniformed waiters in turbans, prices that haven't moved much in a decade, and a clientele of retired Sector-17 regulars who treat it as a club.
Tip: Filter coffee here is strong-and-milky in the Madras style; ask for it 'less sugar' as the default pour comes pre-sweetened.
Signature: butter chicken
Sector 28's 50-year-old dhaba, started by the Pal family. Butter chicken and mutton curry are the orders that built the city's appetite for Punjabi non-veg — bench seating, charcoal-tandoor smoke, no menu cards needed.
Tip: The lunch crowd peaks 1-2:30pm and overflows onto the kerb; come at 12 sharp or after 3pm to skip the wait. Cash works fastest.
Signature: chole bhature
Sector 17's heritage sweet shop — chole bhature so famous the queue snakes around the corner on Sunday mornings. The Sindhi community brought the recipe at Partition; the shop is now Chandigarh's default chaat-and-mithai stop.
Tip: The chole bhature counter takes orders separate from the sweets queue — go to the back of the shop, not the main mithai display, or you'll wait twice.
Signature: thin-crust pizza with cold beer
Sector 9 cafe-bar with a wraparound terrace — the daytime brunch and evening beer-and-pizza venue PEC and Punjab University grads default to. Live acoustic gigs Wednesdays.
Tip: The terrace is closed when wind picks up — call ahead in monsoon (July-Sept). Indoor seating loses the whole point.

India's cleanest and most planned city — the contrast with every other Indian city is shocking. Rock Garden is quirky and fun. Sukhna Lake for an evening walk. The sector markets are organized and hassle-free. It is not exciting but it is comfortable. Good stopover between Delhi and Shimla or Manali.
💡 Tip: Rent a bicycle from Sukhna Lake. Chandigarh is flat and the sector roads are wide — cycling is the best way to experience the city.
Rock Garden kept our kids busy for 2 hours — the sculptures made from recycled materials fascinated them. Sukhna Lake has pedal boats. The Rose Garden in February-March has 1600 varieties and enough open space for kids to run. The city is safe, clean, and walkable — rare in India.
💡 Tip: The Science City on Manimajra road has interactive exhibits, a dinosaur park, and an IMAX theatre. Half-day activity for kids.
Sukhna Lake at sunset with the Shivalik hills in the background — quiet and romantic. The Sector 17 plaza has good restaurants and a European pedestrian-street feel. Le Corbusier Centre is interesting if you appreciate architecture. Chandigarh is pleasant but not a destination — treat it as a one-night stopover.
💡 Tip: Dinner at Sector 7 or Sector 35 for the best restaurants. Sector 17 is more tourist-oriented and overpriced.
Chandigarh is too organized and clean to feel like an adventure — it is more like a rest stop. One night is enough. See Rock Garden, walk Sukhna Lake, eat at the dhabas on the highway outside the city. Then move on to Shimla, Kasol, or Manali where the real Himachal begins.
💡 Tip: The Sector 22 market has the cheapest food in the city. Chole bhature and lassi for Rs 80 total.
