Darjeeling in July
West Bengal, India
July is peak monsoon and Darjeeling is drowning. Rainfall hits 600-800mm for the month โ that is not a typo. Landslides on NH-55 between Siliguri and Darjeeling become a weekly occurrence, sometimes daily. The road to Tiger Hill is frequently blocked. Kanchenjunga has been invisible for weeks and will stay that way. Cloud cover sits at town elevation, so you're literally walking through clouds on Mall Road โ sounds romantic until your shoes are soaked for the third consecutive day. The toy train operates but with cancellations and multi-hour delays. Leeches appear on forest trails. Second flush tea processing continues in the factories, which becomes the only reliable indoor activity.
The July story
NakshIQ is direct: do not plan a holiday to Darjeeling in July unless you have a specific, non-negotiable reason. The town is not dangerous, but it is deeply unpleasant for sightseeing. Everything you came to see โ Kanchenjunga, tea gardens from viewpoints, the toy train experience, Batasia Loop panorama โ is obscured by cloud and rain. That said, if you're already here or truly committed: the tea factories are running full production, and estate managers have zero tourists to deal with, so conversations are genuine and unhurried. Rooms are 50-60% off peak rates. The few travellers who are here tend to be interesting โ writers, researchers, long-stay foreigners. Glenary's in the rain has a melancholy charm. But pack accordingly: waterproof bags for electronics, quick-dry everything, and antifungal powder for your feet.
