Patal Bhuvaneshwar Cave Temple.
The cave can only take small groups at a time, the priests don't market it, and it's two hours of mountain road from the nearest hotel cluster.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
A limestone cave temple about 38km from Chaukori — 90 feet underground, 160m deep — where stalactites and stalagmites have been read for centuries as Hindu deities. The Skanda Purana mentions it as the abode of 33 crore gods. You crawl down a narrow stone passage into a cathedral-sized inner chamber; a temple priest (Bhandari family, hereditary custodians) walks you through which formation is which. Best: Year-round; cave is climate-stable. Avoid heavy monsoon (Jul-Aug) for road conditions.. Reach: Drive 38km from Chaukori via Berinag and Gangolihat (2-2.5 hours). Pay entry at the cave office; priest guides you. Total time inside ~45 mins.. Tip: Small entry fee (Rs 100-200 last reported). No photography permitted inside the cave. Wear shoes with grip — the descent is steep stone steps. Not suitable for severe claustrophobia or mobility issues; some sections require crawling. Carry a torch even though there's lighting..
