Peak Season
Bhimtal in April
Uttarakhand, India
April is arguably Bhimtal's best month. Temperatures settle at 20-28°C, wildflowers carpet every hillside, and the lake is warm enough for rowing without chattering teeth. The aquarium on the lake island reopens fully. Weekend visitors from Delhi arrive but weekdays remain unhurried. Book ahead for Easter weekend.
The April story
The island aquarium, despite its modest size, is one of India's few freshwater aquariums and worth 30 minutes. The real April payoff is the surrounding forest walks — the trail from Bhimtal dam to Hidimba Parvat through oak and pine forest takes two hours and rewards with panoramic lake views. Naukuchiatal, just 4km away, offers kayaking and paddle-boarding that Bhimtal lake doesn't. For birdwatchers, April sees the last of the winter migrants overlap with returning summer species — a brief window of maximum diversity. Accommodation ranges from Rs 1200 budget rooms to Rs 5000 lake-view cottages. Book the lake-facing side — the other side faces the road and construction noise. Evening temperatures still drop to 12-14°C, so carry a light jacket for post-sunset lakeside walks.
