HIDDEN GEMS · 3 NEAR BARNAWAPARA
Sanctuary visitors run safari loops; few request the hide-stop at Tendua Tank, which only works in the late dry season.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
An open watering tank inside the buffer zone where leopards (tendua), gaur, and sloth bear visit through April-May afternoons when surface water elsewhere has dried up. Forest guards rotate hide-permission requests and you must take a registered guide. Patience over photos: an hour seated, no movement, no flash.
The Mahanadi crossing at Balodabazar - the district that the western half of the sanctuary actually sits in - has working ghats, a few small Shiva shrines, and the kind of slow river-town atmosphere that pairs well with a 5am safari and a late breakfast on the way back. Best at sunrise or before evening safari.
An ASI-protected stream-bend with brick stupa remains, a small temple, and the local belief that this is the Valmiki ashram clearing where Lav and Kush were raised. The natural spring (turtur means 'gurgling') runs year-round; the site is shaded and almost never crowded outside the Maagh Purnima mela week.

Tip: Bookings only via the Chhattisgarh Forest Department portal (cgforest.com/barnawapara). Choose the food-inclusive tariff at booking — kitchen runs out of options once the duty roster eats. Solar + generator power; eat by 20:30 or sit by candle.

The only sit-down restaurant inside Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary — Chhattisgarh Tourism's 12-cottage eco-resort kitchen, ~9 km from the main entry gate. TripAdvisor reviewers (4.7/5 across 20 reviews) consistently flag the food as the resort's strongest card; one calls it 'really commendable.' For a 245 sq km dry-deciduous sanctuary that holds gaur, sloth bear, leopard and chital, this is functionally the only post-safari meal that isn't a fried snack at the gate.
Tip: Order the Chhattisgarhi thali ahead of the standard Indian/Chinese menu — the kitchen does desi muga and chausela properly when notified. No cellular network or WiFi at the resort; carry cash or use the in-house tab. Lunch service ends by 13:30; pre-book if you've come on a day safari.

Tip: Stick to the freshly-made daytime thali — avoid late-night non-veg unless you've watched it being cooked. Take a tea break here on the return drive; the next reliable kitchen is back in Mahasamund town.

Two thatched chai stalls open at the sanctuary gate from ~05:30 to catch safari jeeps before the first drive — the only food economy at the sanctuary edge before the Hareli kitchen lights up at 07:00. TripAdvisor reviewers of the sanctuary repeatedly mention these as the pre-dawn chai before a sambar/gaur sighting.
Tip: Cash only, no UPI. Stalls shut once the morning safari window closes around 08:00 and reopen at 14:00 for the evening departures. Carry your own water; nothing bottled here past mid-morning.
