“The Kumaoni heritage town where Kasar Devi cosmic energy attracted Swami Vivekananda, D.H. Lawrence, and Timothy Leary before Instagram discovered it.”
WHY SPECIAL
Almora sits on a horseshoe-shaped ridge with panoramic Himalayan views. The Kasar Devi temple area has measurably different geomagnetic readings — Swami Vivekananda meditated here, Timothy Leary tripped here, D.H. Lawrence wrote here. The town still carries its Kumaoni bones — temples, bazaars, a rhythm most Uttarakhand hill stations have traded away for concrete.

Kumaon heritage town — Kasar Devi area is Western-traveller-friendly. Chitai + Golu temples daytime. Stay in Kasar Devi or town-centre hotels.
Almora is a centuries-old hill town in the Kumaon region, once the capital of the Chand dynasty. It sits on a horseshoe-shaped ridge in the Himalayas and is known for its rich cultural heritage, traditional Kumaoni cuisine, and vibrant craft traditions including copper metalwork.
Casual clothing is fine. Carry warm layers year-round as evenings get cold. Cover shoulders and knees when visiting the Nanda Devi and Chitai Golu temples.
Food is generally safe in established restaurants. Try the local bal mithai (chocolate-like sweet) and singori. Stick to bottled water. Street food quality is decent but stick to busy stalls.
Cards accepted at some hotels and larger shops. Most bazaar shops and restaurants are cash-only. ATMs available in main town but can run dry on weekends. Carry cash.
moderate — hotel staff and tourist-facing shops speak basic English, but local bazaar vendors mostly speak Hindi/Kumaoni
Jio and Airtel work in Almora town. Signal weakens in surrounding villages. BSNL has the widest coverage in remote Kumaon areas.
Delhi — approximately 370 km by road
Standard Indian e-Visa covers Almora. No special permits required.

Famous for Almora's bal mithai (chocolate-coated fudge) and singori (sweet wrapped in malu leaf).
Cluster of 124 large and small stone temples from 7th-14th century. Important Shiva worship center in dense deodar forest.
Ancient temple on a ridge with geomagnetic properties (NASA-detected Van Allen Belt anomaly). Cosmic energy site.
Sunrise and sunset viewpoint with panoramic views of the Himalayan range including Nanda Devi.
NEIGHBOURHOODS · WITHIN ALMORA
India highest 9-hole golf course — with a Himalayan backdrop that makes Augusta look suburban
Upat Golf Course at 1829m. 9 holes. Open to visitors for a round. Even non-golfers come for the views — manicured green fairways with snow-capped Himalayas behind. The cantonment charm adds to the atmosphere.
800 years older than Konark — one of India oldest sun temples and almost nobody visits
9th century AD sun temple. 45 subsidiary shrines around the main temple. The stone carvings are exquisite. Unlike Konark, this gets maybe 10 visitors a day. 2km uphill walk from the road.
The cosmic energy spot — measurably different geomagnetic readings attracted hippies before Goa existed
Kasar Devi temple sits on a ridge with demonstrably anomalous geomagnetic readings (NASA allegedly studied it). Swami Vivekananda meditated here (1890). Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, Timothy Leary all came in the 1960s-70s. The Crank Ridge hippie colony still exists.

Jageshwar temple complex is somewhat known. The caves 2km upstream are not.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
Natural caves used by sadhus for meditation. Carved Shiva lingams inside. Dense deodar forest. Completely untouristy.
300km Himalayan panorama. Leopards. Complete silence.
A 9th-century Surya temple built by Katyuri king Katarmalla, oriented to catch the first rays of the rising sun. The main shrine sits ringed by 45 smaller stone temples on a 2,116m ridge. The original carved wooden doors were stolen and what remains was relocated to the National Museum in Delhi after a 10th-century idol theft — but the stone work and the sunrise alignment are still on site. Best: Mar-Jun and Sep-Nov; clear pre-noon light is best for photos. Reach: 19km north of Almora on the road toward Kosi; park at Adhauli village and walk 1.5km up a stone path. ASI signage at the trailhead.. Tip: ASI-managed, no entry fee. Wear grippy shoes — the stone path is polished smooth. Allow 1.5-2 hours including the climb. No toilets or food at the temple; carry water..

WHERE TO EAT · 9 VERIFIED PICKS
Signature: butter chicken
One of Almora's oldest sit-down restaurants — multi-cuisine menu covering north Indian, Chinese and south Indian, with a dependable kitchen since 1964. Where local families and out-of-town visitors converge for the butter chicken-and-naan default.
Tip: The Mughlai side outperforms the Chinese — order butter chicken with tandoori roti rather than the chowmein. Around ₹500 for two; near Hotel Shikhar on the L. R. Sah Road stretch of Mall Road.
Signature: bal mithai
Started by brothers Kheem Singh and Mohan Singh Rautela near the KMOU bus station after they trained in Joga Lal Sah's halwai shop. The most popular bal mithai counter in Almora — roasted khoya cubes coated with sugar-pearl poppy seeds, the recipe unchanged for over a century. State-sweet status of Uttarakhand.
Tip: Cash only — no UPI or card. Open 6:30am-8pm; pick up a kilo at ₹380 before catching a Roadways bus, the shop is steps from the stand.
Signature: bal mithai (original 1865 recipe)
The actual origin shop of bal mithai — Lala Joga Lal Sah set up here in 1865 and is credited with inventing the khoya-and-sugar-pearl sweet that became Uttarakhand's state mithai. Now run by Harish Lal Shah, the fifth-generation owner. Less famous than Rautela's but the founding lineage.
Tip: Ask for the singauri — fresh khoya wrapped in a malu (oak) leaf cone. Eat it the same day; the leaf gives a herbal note that fades by morning.
Signature: mutton momos
Family-run Tibetan kitchen at walking distance from the Kasar Devi temple — thukpa, momos, chowmein, both veg and non-veg. The closest thing Almora has to a Manali-style Tibetan canteen, with a Himalayan view from the parking lot.
Tip: Mutton momos and thukpa are the kitchen's strengths; the Indian dishes are filler. Vegetarian options are limited — stick to veg thukpa or veg chowmein. Hygiene is variable in monsoon; go in dry season.
Signature: kumaoni thali
The dining room at Hotel Shikhar — opened 1989 at Shikhar Tiraha, the central crossroads on Mall Road. One of the few Almora kitchens that runs a serious Kumaoni section alongside continental and north Indian, served on a terrace with valley views.
Tip: Ask for the Kumaoni thali specifically — it's not always pushed at non-Indian guests. High tea on the balcony 4-6pm catches the best afternoon light over the ridge.
Signature: wood-fired pizza
The Crank's Ridge institution — owner Mohan built Binsar Retreat from a single mud cottage. Cafe at the top of the property does Indian, continental and Israeli (shakshuka, hummus) for the long-stay traveller crowd that's come to Kasar Devi since the Beats. Wooden furniture, thatch roof, 90s playlist.
Tip: Service can be brusque — go for the food and the view, not for warm hospitality. The cafe sits higher than Dolma; the Himalayan panorama at sunset is the actual reason to climb up.

8-room boutique retreat at Kasar Devi ridge — Kumaoni mud-stone-pinelog architecture, valley-facing rooms framing Almora town below. Cleaner Almora pin than The Kumaon, which we keep as Binsar's xfactor. Address: Kasar Devi, Almora, Uttarakhand 263601.
homestay
At ₹3,000–5,000/night, Badriniwas delivers the two things Almora is actually worth visiting for: sunrise mountain views from a terrace and walking access to Kasar Devi, Chitai Golu Devta, and the Nanda Devi temple circuit. The Booking.com 8.1 rating across 2024–2025 reviews points to consistent cleanliness and hospitality—the metrics that matter most at this price band. Breakfast comes from the home kitchen, vegetarian only. Decor is basic. That is the trade-off at this rate, and it's a fair one
“Vegetarian breakfast from home kitchen; sunrise and sunset mountain views from terrace; walking access to Nanda Devi, Kasar Devi, and Chitai Golu Devta temples”
homestay
We pick Deodar for one specific combination that nothing else in Almora offers: a colonial-era cantonment bungalow in the Circuit House area with Himalayan views through pine and oak canopy—and Italian food made in-house. That last detail is not a gimmick; it signals an owner who is doing something deliberate and personal rather than running a standard hill-station homestay menu. Capacity is 4–5 rooms, which means the place either works well for you or is fully booked. Contact ahead—OTA availabi

Retired school teacher who conducts heritage walks through Almora bazaar. Knows the history of every carved wooden doorway, every 200-year-old shop. His walk through Lala Bazaar with stories of the Chand dynasty is better than any museum.
