Kasol vs Tosh
The backpacker's dilemma — valley floor vs mountain village
Tosh is 20 minutes above Kasol. Same valley, different universe. Here's the real difference.
Kasol: The Hub
Kasol sits on the Parvati River at 1,640m. Israeli cafes, backpacker hostels, gear shops, ATMs. It's the base camp for Kheerganga trek. Network works (patchy). You can get everything you need. The downside: it's becoming crowded, especially weekends and holidays.
Tosh: The Escape
Tosh sits at 2,400m overlooking the valley. Quieter. Views are dramatically better — you see snow peaks that Kasol's valley floor hides. Homestays with mountain terraces. No ATMs, limited shops, network barely works. The trade-off: less convenience for more beauty.
The Score
Both peak October-November (5/5) and April-May (4/5). Both dangerous July-August (monsoon landslides). Tosh gets colder earlier — November nights at 2,400m need serious layers.
Choose Kasol If...
You want convenience + a social scene. Meeting other travelers, cafes with wifi, easy access to Kheerganga. Budget: ₹500-1500/night.
Choose Tosh If...
You want views + solitude. Mountain village life. Waking up to snow peaks. Disconnecting from your phone (no choice — network barely works). Budget: ₹400-1000/night.
The Real Answer
Stay in Tosh, day-trip to Kasol for supplies. Best of both.
