# Desert Safari in Jaisalmer: Scam-Proof Guide to the Thar
Every hotel in Jaisalmer will offer you a desert safari. Most are selling the same thing: a jeep ride to Sam Sand Dunes (40km away), a camel ride, dinner under the stars, and a cultural show. The experience ranges from magical to miserable depending entirely on who you book with and what you expect.
The Three Types of Safari
**Sam Sand Dunes (tourist):** The most popular. Large dunes, multiple camps, camel rides, cultural programs. Rs 1,500-3,000 per person for overnight. This is Jaisalmer's Disneyland — organized, accessible, and crowded. If you want Instagram dunes with minimal effort, this works.
**Khuri Sand Dunes (quieter):** 45km from Jaisalmer. Smaller dunes, fewer camps, more authentic village interaction. Rs 2,000-4,000 per person. The local families in Khuri village host guests directly. This is closer to what a desert experience should feel like.
**Non-touristy desert (real):** Multi-day camel treks into the Thar with a guide. Sleep on blankets under open sky, no camps. Rs 2,500-4,000 per day. This is the real desert — no electricity, no phone signal, no tourists. You need to be comfortable with basic conditions.
The Scams
1. **"Our camp is luxury"** — most "luxury" camps at Sam are identical tents with different names. Ask for photos of the specific tent, not the marketing brochure.
2. **Commission game** — your hotel gets 30-50% commission on every safari they book. Book directly with operators at the fort or online.
3. **Camel welfare** — some operators overwork camels in summer heat. If the camel looks distressed, refuse the ride. Ethical operators limit rides to 1-2 hours and provide water breaks.
4. **Hidden costs** — "Rs 1,500 all-inclusive" often excludes jeep transfer, camel ride, or dinner. Get the full breakdown in writing.
Best Months
**October-February:** Perfect. Desert temperatures drop to 5-15°C at night (bring warm layers). Days are 20-28°C. Clear skies, spectacular stars.
**March-April:** Warming up. Daytime 30-35°C. Still manageable for morning/evening activities. Avoid midday.
**May-September:** Avoid. Temperatures exceed 45°C in May-June. Monsoon July-September brings flash floods to desert normally.
