Best Time to Visit Rishikesh: Month-by-Month Intelligence
Monsoon reality check — when the Ganga is your friend and when it isn't
Destinations in this article
Rishikesh at 340m is one of India's most accessible adventure destinations. Rafting, yoga, bungee jumping, Beatles Ashram — the list is long. But timing changes everything. Here's the data.
October-November: Peak (Score 5/5)
Post-monsoon perfection. The Ganga has settled from its dangerous July-August spate. Rafting reopens with Grade 3-4 rapids in perfect condition. Air is clean, skies are clear, temperature is ideal (10-28°C). Yoga ashrams are buzzing. Fewer crowds than the winter yoga season. Best value for money.
March: The Rafting Sweet Spot (Score 5/5)
Perfect 15-28°C. The water level in the Ganga is ideal for white-water rafting — the rapids are technical and exciting without being dangerous. Bungee jumping weather is comfortable. All riverside camps are operational. This is when adventure operators are at their best.
July-August: The Ganga in Spate (Score 1/5)
This is not a "monsoon adds charm" situation. The Ganga becomes genuinely dangerous. All river activities suspended. Beaches submerged. Flash flood risk is real. The Kanwar Yatra in July closes roads and creates chaos. Stay away from the river entirely during these months.
February-April: Rising Sweet Spot (Score 4-5/5)
Maha Shivratri (February) electrifies the ghats. Yoga retreats are in full swing. Rafting conditions are excellent. Temperature rises through this period but stays comfortable. By April, afternoons get hot — plan activities for morning.
May-June: Hot and Humid (Score 2-3/5)
28-40°C. Rafting still operational but sweaty. The river drops low. Yoga at dawn only — midday is unbearable. Pre-monsoon humidity builds in June. Not dangerous, just unpleasant.
Kids: 3/5
Rishikesh is moderate for kids. The rafting minimum age is 12 for most operators (14 for Grade 4). Bungee is 12+. The Beatles Ashram and ghat walks work for all ages. Medical facilities are adequate (Dehradun hospital 45 min away). The low altitude (340m) means no acclimatization concerns.
Bottom Line
October-November or March are your months. February if you want the Shivratri energy. Never July-August — the river doesn't care about your holiday plans.

Hampi: when the heat is kind
Hampi is the classic case of a destination whose reputation outran its calendar. NakshIQ scores 5/5 in January and February, 4/5 in March, and falls off a cliff from April onward. There is exactly one four-month window where the ruins are not hostile.

Despite the camel-fair reputation, Pushkar in October is better than November
Pushkar is sold as a November destination — the Camel Fair, 50,000 camels. The NakshIQ score says October earns an identical 5/5 and gives you the version of Pushkar that existed before the fair. Same weather, fuller lake, a fraction of the crowd.
