Taj Lake Palace

Jag Niwas was constructed in 1743–1746 by Maharana Jagat Singh II, the 62nd custodian of Mewar, as a summer retreat that appears to float on Lake Pichola. The palace is carved entirely from white marble in a fusion of Mughal and Rajasthani styles—carved balconies, ornate domes, semi-precious stone inlays, and pillared courtyards frame the lake at every angle. The palace housed the royal family for two centuries before becoming a heritage hotel in 1963; Taj Hotels took it over in 1971. The arrival is non-negotiable: a 4-minute private boat launch from Bansi Ghat at dusk delivers you across the lake to the palace steps. The 65 rooms and 18 grand suites are named after historical figures (Maharani Suite, Maharaja Suite). Dinners overlook the Aravalli mountains and Udaipur's old city. The palace underwent renovation from April–September 2026; best months to visit are October through March. Book 6+ months ahead for peak season; the Lake Palace is not a convention destination—it is a pilgrimage.
