Rambagh Palace

Rambagh Palace began as a garden house in 1835, built for the wet nurse of Prince Ram Singh II. By the late 19th century, it had become a royal hunting lodge; in 1931, Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II transformed it into his principal residence and hosted luminaries including Queen Elizabeth II and Jacqueline Kennedy. After independence, the maharaja converted it into a palace hotel in 1957, the first of its kind in India. Taj Hotels took over in 1972 and restored it. The palace spans 47 acres of manicured gardens and courtyards in Indo-Saracenic style, with carved stone and Mughal arches. Seventy-nine rooms and suites are categorized: Grand Presidential Suites (2), Grand Royal Suites (2), Royal Suites (5), Historical Suites (24, many named after historical guests), Palace Rooms (41), Luxury Rooms (5). The Grand Royal Suites include original furnishings and manuscripts from the royal family archive. Dining is garden-side or in the palace's original dining halls. The location is 5 km south of the old city—close enough for day trips, far enough to feel removed. Peak season (October–March) books months ahead; pre-book suites if you want historical interiors.
