Maharajas' Express is India's answer to Europe's Orient Express, operated by IRCTC since 2010. Each of the 14 luxury coaches is named after a gemstone (Emerald, Sapphire, Diamond) and styled after private royal saloons of erstwhile Indian maharajas. The train carries 88 guests in four cabin types: Deluxe, Junior Suite, Suite, Presidential Suite. The 'Heritage of India' itinerary (6 nights/7 days, the canonical offering) departs Mumbai, crosses through Ajanta Caves (UNESCO site), Aurangabad, and loops the Rajasthan golden triangle—Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaipur, Ranthambore National Park, Agra's Taj Mahal—arriving Delhi. All meals (multi-cuisine restaurants), butler service, soft drinks, guided tours, and monument entry fees included. Presidential suites feature butler-drawn baths and champagne welcome. Peak season (October–March) costs ₹6.5L–₹21L per person depending on cabin; lean season rates drop 20–30%. The train runs only September–April. Booking window: 120+ days. A genuine rail-hotel hybrid—slower than commercial trains but as comfortable as a five-star resort.
