Solan is the mushroom capital of India, producing over 50% of India's button mushrooms. At 1,502m, it is the district headquarters and a rapidly growing town on the Chandigarh-Shimla highway. It is home to the Mohan Meakin Brewery (established 1855), one of India's oldest breweries producing Old Monk rum and Solan No. 1 whisky. The Shoolini Mata Temple hosts a major annual fair.
