Sanchi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the finest surviving Buddhist stupas in the world, built by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. The Great Stupa's gateways (toranas) have extraordinary carved narratives of Buddha's life. Sanchi was lost to jungle for centuries and rediscovered by the British in 1818.
