The stay decisions worth flagging in Point Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary.
Point Calimere has no commercial hotel infrastructure inside or near the sanctuary. The Forest Department Rest House is the only facility within the core area, but it is frequently occupied by government officials and has 1–2 rooms total. The one private guesthouse at the cape — VM Thandapani — has minimal online presence and no formal booking system. Most sources recommend basing yourself in Vailankanni (48 km) or Vedaranyam (11 km) and driving in. April is dry and hot (36–40°C); the flamingo and migratory bird populations have thinned by this point compared to November–January peak. Blackbuck remain. Roads from Vedaranyam to the cape are functional but narrow and poorly lit after dark.
There is no experience-tier property at Point Calimere, so the usual value-vs-experience comparison doesn't apply. The real decision is this: VM Thandapani Guest Bungalow puts you 1 km from the shoreline and inside the sanctuary boundary, which means a 4:30am walk to the flamingo flats without a car. Church View Suites at ₹3,900/night puts you 48 km and a 1.5-hour drive away, which is manageable but costs you the pre-dawn window that makes April visits worthwhile. If VM Thandapani is reachable and has a room, take it regardless of the price difference. If it isn't — and it often isn't — book Church View Suites and factor in transport.
No experience pick here that's worth the flag. See alternatives below.
Church View Suites
We pick this over MGM Vailankanni or Udhayam because it's the only one in the Vailankanni cluster that a named editorial source — Roundglass Sustain (2024) — explicitly recommends by name. At ₹890/night more than MGM and ₹1,950/night more than Udhayam, you're paying for a known quantity in a town built for visitor throughput, which matters when every other variable in this trip is uncertain.
VM Thandapani Guest Bungalow
This is the only private lodging at the cape itself. Being 1 km from the shoreline means you can reach the flamingo and blackbuck zones before motorised visitors arrive from Vedaranyam. Travellers who've stayed describe the manager as helpful and the location as purpose-built for serious birders. Nothing else in the dossier puts you this close.
Forest Department Rest House / Flamingo House
Sleeping inside the sanctuary boundary near a lighthouse that has been used as a BNHS bird migration study site since 1959 is a specific, non-replicable thing. You're not booking a room — you're booking access to the core area at night and at dawn, when no day-visitor can enter. That's the only reason to pursue this. It is genuinely difficult to get: Tripadvisor reviewers as recently as 2026 report the rooms occupied by officials, and there are 1–2 rooms total.
