Chandratal (the Moon Lake) sits in a high-altitude bowl near the Kunzum Pass, accessible only when the road from Batal is clear — typically late June to mid-October. The lake changes colour through the day from turquoise to deep blue as the light shifts. Camping is permitted at a designated ground 3km from the lake. It's one of the highest lakes in India with road access, and often the centrepiece of a Manali-Spiti-Manali loop.

At 4,883m, Suraj Tal is India's third-highest lake. The Bhaga river originates here. Pair it with the Baralacha La drive for a full-day high-altitude lake circuit from the Chandratal camps.
At 4,551m, Kunzum La separates Lahaul from Spiti — the old-school route between the valleys. The Kunzum Mata temple at the top is a ritual stop where every Spiti-bound vehicle is supposed to honk three times.
Bara Shigri is the longest glacier in Himachal at roughly 30km, second-longest in the Indian Himalayas. The pull-out 4km past Batal on the Kaza road gives an uninterrupted view of the glacier tongue with Papsura (6451m) and Dharamsura (6446m) above. Go early — by mid-morning the wind funnels through the Chandra valley and standing photography becomes hard. June-October only; rest of year the road is closed.

45+ वर्षों से Dorje Bodh और Hishey Chhomo (स्थानीय में चाचा-चाची) द्वारा कज़ा रोड पर 3900 मीटर पर चलाया जाता है, चंद्रताल झील से 14 किमी दूर। पत्थर की दीवारें और तिरपाल की छत, 8-10 ट्रक ड्राइवरों और फँसे यात्रियों के लिए पत्थर की चारपाई पर गद्दे। जून 2010 की बर्फ़बारी में फँसे पर्यटकों को आश्रय देने के लिए प्रसिद्ध।
Tip: केवल मध्य जून से मध्य अक्टूबर तक खुला — बाकी समय बर्फ़ में दबा रहता है। केवल नकद, कोई संकेत नहीं। अपना टॉयलेट पेपर साथ लाएँ। अगर पत्थर की चारपाई पर रात बितानी हो तो जल्दी पूछें — शाम 7 बजे तक भर जाते हैं।

Tip: सटीक नकद लेकर आएँ — शाम 4 बजे के बाद ₹500 नोटों का खुल्ला नहीं क्योंकि दिन की रसीदें सुरक्षित जगह जाती हैं। यहाँ चाय Chacha Chachi से गरम है लेकिन Chacha Chachi का राजमा क्षेत्रीय मानक है, इसलिए यहाँ मैगी ऑर्डर करें।

Batal में दो मौसमी ढाबों में से दूसरा — Chacha Chachi जैसी ही जून-अक्तूबर की खिड़की में संचालित, अक्सर पुराना ढाबा भरा होने पर अतिरिक्त भीड़ लेता है। वही पत्थर-और-तरपाल निर्माण, वही ट्रकर-गद्दा सोने का विकल्प 200-300 रुपये में।
Tip: Chacha Chachi भरा हो (जुलाई-अगस्त में सामान्य) तो 50 मीटर आगे चलें। वही खाना, वही क़ीमत। कुछ साल अक्तूबर में थोड़ा देर तक चलते हैं अगर बर्फ़ न पड़े।

Losar Spiti की तरफ़ Kunzum दर्रे (4,551 मीटर) के बाद पहला गाँव है — Chandratal की ओर जाने वाले यात्री 70 किमी के वीरान ऊँचाई-मरुस्थल में प्रवेश करने से पहले जो अंतिम सड़क-बस्ती देखते हैं। Tenzin परिवार इस ढाबा-सह-होमस्टे और Losar के तीन अन्य गाँव की रसोइयों के साथ मिलकर जून-अक्तूबर की खुली खिड़की के दौरान पूरे Manali-Kaza यातायात को सेवा देता है। यहाँ का थुकपा स्थानीय जौ और याक-पनीर से बनता है, न कि तैयार नूडल से — जो Spiti में भी अब दुर्लभ होता जा रहा है।
Tip: दोपहर 12-3 बजे का समय सबसे अच्छा — 5 बजे तक अधिकतर बसें आगे बढ़ जाती हैं और स्टॉक कम हो जाता है। 4,250 मीटर पर Chandratal जाने से पहले यहाँ पहाड़ी बीमारी (AMS) के लिए अनुकूलन करें।

Chandratal (4300m, "Moon Lake" in Spitian) is day-trip-able from Kaza but most visitors camp overnight at the 14km-away designated camp (actual lake camping banned since 2014 to protect ecosystem). Leave Kaza by 5am (80km, 3h via Losar + Kunzum Pass 4551m).
Arrive camp area by 9am. Walk the final 1km to Chandratal Lake. The lake is crescent moon-shaped (namesake), waters shift blue-green-turquoise with sun angles. 90 min walk around perimeter — keep to the signed trail, ecosystem is fragile.
Lunch at campground dhaba (basic — maggi, dal-rice, chai). Rest at lake for photography + light lunch. Some hike up to the nearby ridge for Chandra river valley views.
Begin return by 2pm. Kunzum Pass second crossing. Back at Kaza by 7pm. Long day.
If overnight: camp dinner with other travelers. Stars at 4300m are genuinely stunning. Camp temperature drops to near-freezing even in July.

Chandratal is accessible Jul–Oct only — Kunzum Pass closes Nov–Jun with snow. Summer rain turns road to mud; check road conditions via your Kaza driver morning-of. Do NOT attempt in rain or fresh snow (zero drainage + narrow unpaved road = instant impassable).
