One of 12 Jyotirlingas — Sahyadri temple, giant Indian squirrel sanctuary, and monsoon treks
Why Special
Bhimashankar is one of India's 12 Jyotirlingas (most sacred Shiva temples) set deep in the Sahyadri hills at 940m. The Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary surrounding it protects the Indian giant squirrel (Shekru) — Maharashtra's state animal. The trek from Khandas village (6km, 3-4 hours) is one of Pune's most popular monsoon hikes. The temple itself is a beautiful Hemadpanthi-style structure.
