The stay decisions worth flagging in Bekal.
Bekal's stay market is thin at the top: two IHCL properties (Taj and Gateway, both Tata-group) dominate the luxury end. The LaLit competes on paper but has documented dining and maintenance gaps. Mid-range is nearly absent—the market jumps from ₹4,000 homestays to ₹18,000 chain rates with little in between. April is pre-monsoon; the Arabian Sea runs rough by late April and beach access at Taj Bekal is already wave-limited.
Bekal Fort Homestay (₹2,000-4,000/night) and Taj Bekal (₹18,000-28,000/night) are not a straightforward upgrade comparison—they serve entirely different trip shapes. The ₹14,000-24,000/night gap at Taj Bekal buys you a Kettuvallam-inspired plunge pool villa on Kappil River backwaters, three on-site restaurants, a full Ayurveda spa, and private beach access. What it doesn't buy is Anoop's mother's Aviyal and Matta Rice at breakfast, or a host who books your auto-rickshaw to Azhithala beach. If your trip is a couple's anniversary or a detox stay, close that gap. If you're here to move through Kasaragod's coast and you sleep light, don't.
Taj Bekal Resort & Spa, Kerala
We pick Taj over Gateway Bekal because Taj has five-plus years of operational consistency on record; Gateway opened December 2024 and its wedding-event infrastructure means service attention tilts toward event bookings, not leisure guests. At Taj, the 26-acre riverside property delivers what the price promises—Kettuvallam-inspired villas with private plunge pools over Kappil River backwaters, three restaurants, and J Wellness Circle Ayurveda. Book a villa with plunge pool, not a standard room: t
Bekal Fort Homestay
Owned by Anoop and family; his mother cooks Aviyal, Matta Rice, and Papaya kootu. That's the stay. The 2-acre waterside property with coconut and betel nut trees is quiet, and Anoop arranges auto-rickshaw transport to Azhithala beach and Mookambikai temple—stops you'd miss without a local pointing you there. Kerala Tourism Authority listed; repeat travellers have ranked it among best homestays nationally. Three caveats to hold: no recent 2024-2025 reviews are on record, so confirm current operat
ShriGo Bekal Fort Resort & Spa
We pick this solely on one variable: 300 metres from Bekal Fort's entrance. If your trip is organised around the Fort—early morning light on the laterite walls, walking over at dusk without booking a cab—nothing else in the dossier puts you this close. The peacocks are a bonus. Everything else is a trade-off: rooms are small, there is no on-site restaurant (nearby Apple restaurant does room delivery), and mosquito control is inconsistent. Go in with that picture and the location argument holds.
Poothali Homestay
Winner of Sustainable Leadership at the Indian Responsible Tourism Awards 2023 (Outlook Traveller)—that's a verifiable signal, not marketing copy. Three bedrooms only, antique decor, locally crafted furnishings, and home-cooked North Kerala cuisine. The specific draw: Theyyam ritual access runs November through May, which puts April squarely inside the window. Poothali's hosts arrange direct access to pottery villages, bronze-casters, Ranipuram hill trails, and Kavvayi mangrove kayaking. You won
