Uttarakhand · Garhwal · 3,133m
Why Special

The stay decisions worth flagging in Badrinath.
The upgrade ceiling in Badrinath town is low by design — no Taj, no Oberoi, no international chain operates here. The highest-category property is Sarovar Portico at ₹7,000–16,000/night. Spending ₹9,000–12,000 more than GMVN Yatri Niwas (₹1,100–3,500) buys you heated bedsheets, a multi-cuisine restaurant, and an Ayurvedic spa — but not meaningfully better proximity to the temple (both are under 500m). Amritara The Avadh, estimated at ₹8,000–14,000, offers the only boutique-aesthetic alternative with temple-view rooms, but has thin social proof in 2024–2026 reviews. If the trip is a pilgrimage circuit and you want to sleep well and leave early, Sarovar Portico's consistent hot water (when it works) and early-morning coordination justify the ₹4,000–6,000 premium over GMVN. If the goal is cost-efficiency across a multi-shrine Char Dham route, GMVN at ₹2,200–3,500 for a deluxe room is the rational call — the money is better saved for Rishikesh or Haridwar, where real hotel tiers exist.
Auli by GMVN
The only ski resort in India with certified runs, and the closest premium stay to Badrinath's alpine landscape that justifies a splurge.
Sarovar Portico Badrinath
Clean rooms, pilgrimage-friendly timing for early temple visits, and reliable WiFi at half the price of premium options.
Badrinath Sarovar Portico or GMVN Nanda Devi
Both sit within 500m of the Badrinath Temple and the Alaknanda River, eliminating transport friction for morning darshans.
Chopta Homestays (via local coordinators)
Stay 25km away in the 'mini Switzerland' of Uttarakhand—alpine meadows, shepherd trails, and Kumaoni family meals that reframe Badrinath as a multi-day circuit rather than a single-night pilgrimage.

Badrinath is one of the four holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites (Char Dham) and one of 108 Divya Desams sacred to Vaishnavites. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and sits at 3,133m between the Nar and Narayana mountain ranges. For devout Hindus, visiting Badrinath at least once is considered essential for salvation.
Conservative dress required. Men should wear full-length pants and shirts. Women should cover arms and legs. Remove shoes before entering the temple. The temple provides free shawls if needed. Shorts and sleeveless tops will be turned away.
Strictly vegetarian town — no meat, fish, or eggs available anywhere. Food is simple, clean, and safe in the established restaurants near the temple. Only bottled water — tap water is not safe despite being mountain spring water.
- Self-appointed pandits (priests) who attach themselves to you at the temple entrance and demand large donations afterward
- Forced VIP darshan fees — the temple itself is free, touts sell queue-skipping at inflated rates
- Fake charitable trusts collecting donations in the temple area using official-looking receipts
Very limited. A couple of hotels accept cards but most transactions are cash-only. One SBI ATM available but frequently runs out of cash during peak season (May-June, Sep-Oct). Carry cash from Rishikesh or Haridwar.
low — primarily Hindi and Garhwali. Temple committee staff speak some English. Most shopkeepers and restaurant staff speak only Hindi.
फ़ोन और SIM
BSNL has the best coverage but still patchy. Jio works intermittently near the main town. Airtel is unreliable. Expect periods without any signal.
Delhi — approximately 530 km by road
Standard Indian e-Visa covers Badrinath. No special permits required. The temple and town are open only May to November due to heavy snowfall.
