Tungnath Temple Trek
The highest Shiva temple in the world at 3680m — Tungnath is one of the Panch Kedar and over 1000 years old. The 3.5km paved path from Chopta is one of the most rewarding short treks in India, winding through rhododendron forests that blaze red in April-May. Unlike the full Chandrashila summit push, this is accessible to families and casual walkers. The temple itself is a masterpiece of Garhwali stone architecture.
Warnings
⚠Altitude can cause breathlessness in unacclimatized visitors
⚠Trail is paved but steep in sections — take it slow
⚠Temple closes during heavy snow (December-March)
⚠No food stalls on trail — carry snacks and water
⚠Monkeys near temple can be aggressive
⚠Weather changes fast — carry rain jacket
⚠Do not confuse with Chandrashila summit (additional 1.5km beyond temple)
Cost Estimate
Budget = self-trek, virtually free. Guide not needed — trail is paved and obvious. Operators offer Chopta stay + trek package Rs 1500-2500/person.
