Amarnath Yatra

Sacred swayambhu ice-lingam shrine inside a 40-metre-tall Himalayan cave at 3,888 m elevation. Two official routes managed by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB): the traditional Pahalgam route (longer, gentler, ~3-5 days, pony/palki available) and the shorter, steeper Baltal route (14 km, 1-2 days). Registration with a Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) and an RFID card is mandatory. Summer-only: the 2025 yatra ran 3 July - 9 August (38 days), aligned to the month of Shravan; exact dates shift yearly with Shravan Purnima. Helicopter services were BANNED for 2025 (both routes no-fly zones 1 July - 10 August) following the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack - this is recent, not a long-standing rule.

How to cover it

  • foot

All routes permit trekking the entire way; the final approach to the cave from Panchtarni (Pahalgam) or Sangam (Baltal) is on foot/animal only.

  • pony

Available on BOTH routes. Official SASB pony rates (w.e.f. 21/07/2025): Chandanwari to Holy Cave Rs 3,500 (up) / Rs 2,600 (down); Baltal to Holy Cave Rs 2,850 (up) / Rs 1,300 (down). Always check jksasb.nic.in/rates.html for current notified rates.

  • palki

Sedan-chair (dandi/palki, 6 carriers) available on both routes. Official SASB 2025 one-way rates: Chandanwari to Holy Cave (Pahalgam) Rs 17,000; Baltal to Holy Cave Rs 7,700. Verify at jksasb.nic.in/rates.html.

  • heli

BANNED for 2025: both routes declared no-fly zones 1 July - 10 August following the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, on the Union Home Ministry recommendation. Covers helicopters, drones, UAVs and paragliders, with exceptions only for medical emergencies and authorised security. NOTE: recent measure, not a long-standing rule - heli lifts operated in prior years.

  • ropeway

FUTURE (not operational). An 11.60 km Baltal-to-Amarnath-cave ropeway is in the DPR stage (NHLML, early 2025, Parvatmala). No operational date set.

What trips pilgrims up

  • Mandatory registration, CHC and RFID card

All pilgrims must register in advance (online via jksasb.nic.in or designated bank branches), carry a Compulsory Health Certificate (CHC) issued after the SASB-notified cut-off date, and collect an RFID card before starting. RFID is checked at base camps and access gates - no card, no entry.

  • Daily pilgrim cap and fast sellout

SASB caps daily pilgrim numbers (around 15,000/day across both routes was reported for 2025; some sources cite ~10,000). Preferred dates - especially around Shravan Purnima - sell out quickly, so register early.

  • Age limits and pregnancy restriction

Pilgrims must generally be between 13 and 70 years of age, and pregnant women beyond 6 weeks are not permitted to register, per SASB medical guidelines (confirm exact thresholds for the current year).

  • Extreme altitude and weather volatility

Cave at 3,888 m; nights drop near or below freezing even in summer. Cloudbursts and rain are common in July-August, and the thin air causes acute mountain sickness - acclimatise and pace the climb, especially over the 4,276 m Mahagunas Pass on the Pahalgam route.

  • Baltal route is shorter but much steeper

Baltal is ~14 km and can be done in 1-2 days return, versus the gentler multi-day Pahalgam route. The steeper gradient makes Baltal harder on elderly or unfit pilgrims; ponies/dandis are available if you cannot trek.

  • No helicopter backup in the 2025 season

With aerial services banned for 2025 (no-fly zone 1 July - 10 August), there is no helicopter shortcut or air evacuation for routine cases; medical emergencies rely on ground evacuation, which can be slow at altitude. Check the current year status before relying on (or ruling out) heli services.

  • Single-use plastic banned

Single-use plastics are prohibited in the yatra area; pilgrims must carry waste out, and violations can attract penalties.
