The Taj Mahal Palace

The Taj Mahal Palace opened December 16, 1903, commissioned by Jamsetji Tata and designed by architects Sitaram Khanderao Vaidya and D.N. Mirza. The hotel was completed two decades before the Gateway of India and was the first sight for ships entering Bombay Harbour. The architecture is Indo-Saracenic—a deliberate blend of Islamic arches, Mughal influences, Gothic pointed arches, and Renaissance ornaments. The defining feature is the distinctive red-tiled Florentine dome crowning elegant arches and architraves, sitting 240 feet above street level and dominating Mumbai's skyline. In 2017, the Taj Mahal Palace became the first building in India to secure intellectual-property-right protection for its architectural design (image trademark). The hotel sits in Colaba, adjacent to the Gateway of India, overlooking the Arabian Sea. The 560 rooms and 44 suites span the original heritage building and modern towers; suites in the heritage wing retain period details and original furnishings. Dining includes multiple restaurants and bars; some overlook the sea. The hotel employs 1,500 staff—one of India's largest hospitality workforces. The flagship property of the Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces group, it has hosted royalty, dignitaries, and celebrities since 1903.
