Why this matters

The Oberoi Rajvilas was the first of the Oberoi Vilas properties and set a template that other Oberoi resorts have since copied. Built in 1997 and designed as a 18th-century Rajput fort, the resort spans 32 acres of landscaped gardens with reflection pools, courtyards, and a fully functional 280-year-old Shiva temple within the compound—one of the oldest structures on the property. The 71 rooms (54 Premier Rooms, 14 Tents, 3 Villas) are set low to the grounds; the luxury tents are 45 square metres with king beds, separate dressing areas, claw-foot bathtubs, and opening onto private patios with lounge beds. Villas include private pools. The old armoury is mounted on the walls; a Rajasthani haveli on the grounds now houses the Oberoi Spa. Surya Mahal serves international cuisine; Raj Mahal (Oct–Apr) serves refined Indian fare on open-air pavilions. The 280-year-old temple, the hand-painted murals, and the deliberately period aesthetics make this feel like a historical compound rather than a contemporary resort. Service is exceptionally warm. Named one of Travel + Leisure's World's Best Hotels 2024. Located 35 km from Jaipur's Pink City—far enough to avoid crowds. Peak season October–March; best rates May–August.

The moment you came for

Breakfast on the pavilion overlooking the temple courtyard, peacocks crossing the gardens, a string quartet playing classical Indian ragas. The property's authenticity lies not in theatricality but in the genuine 280-year-old temple and Rajasthani architectural lineage.
