Why this matters

Deccan Odyssey, launched 2005, is a collaboration between Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) and Indian Railways. The train operates 35 weeks yearly and departs Mumbai (Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus) every Wednesday at 15:30, returning Wednesday evening after 7 nights/8 days. It carries ~200 guests across 21 coaches. The 'Maharashtra Splendor' itinerary loops Mumbai–Nashik (wine capital)–Aurangabad (Ellora & Ajanta Caves, UNESCO sites)–Kolhapur–Goa–Sindhudurg–back to Mumbai. Each cabin features air-con, en suite bath, and butler service. All meals (Indian, international cuisines), soft drinks, and guided excursions with entrance fees included. Onboard spa, mini-gym, bar, library. Peak season (October–March) deluxe cabin costs ₹7.35L per person twin-sharing; presidential suite ₹11.1L. Lean season (May–September) rates drop 15–20%. Payment: 20% at booking, 80% due 50 days prior. Slower itinerary than Palace on Wheels, with more time at heritage sites. This train prioritizes coastal Maharashtra and cave archaeology over the Rajasthan fort circuit.

The moment you came for

Early-morning guided descent into the 2,100-year-old Ajanta Caves—14 Buddhist monasteries hewn from vertical cliffs, with frescoed walls depicting Jataka tales and Bodhisattva sculptures—followed by a wine-tasting session at a Nashik vineyard on the return journey.
