September post-monsoon (though Nako barely had one) brings the year's clearest air. Temperatures: 5-18°C. The lake colour intensifies. Apricot harvest wraps up—dried apricots are packed for winter and market. Tourist numbers decrease as the Spiti circuit season winds down. The monastery settles into autumn rhythm.

Simple rooms in a traditional Kinnauri wooden house overlooking the sacred lake. The family serves butter tea and thukpa. At 3,600m, nights are cold — they provide heavy quilts. Pure Spiti silence.

Order sea buckthorn juice before lunch; the morning press is fresh, by afternoon it's been sitting. Apple crumble appears Aug-Oct when Kinnauri Royal Delicious is in season.

Butter tea is salt-not-sugar — ask for "Indian style" sweet chai if you don't want the traditional salted version. Cash only.

Stick to thukpa, momos and rajma chawal — items that need fresh boiling water do well at 3,660m; complex tandoor or fried plates are hit-or-miss. Order the local seabuckthorn juice if it's on the day's stock.

Ask for siddu if it's available — the steamed Himachali stuffed bread is the dish you can't reliably get further inside Spiti, and it's the local Kinnauri specialty.
