Why Special
Shnongpdeng sits on the Umngot River, the same crystal-clear river that made Dawki famous for its "floating boat" photographs. But while Dawki has become a crowded photo spot, Shnongpdeng (15 km upstream) remains a camping and adventure village. The water is so clear you can see every pebble on the riverbed from 15-20 feet above. Activities include cliff jumping from a natural rock ledge, kayaking, snorkeling, and zip-lining across the river. Riverside camping in tents is the primary accommodation β basic but atmospheric. The village is run by the local Khasi community. There is no ATM, no medical facility (nearest is Dawki, 15 km), and limited cell coverage. The river forms the India-Bangladesh border; you can see Bangladesh from the riverbank. Best visited October to March when the water is clearest; monsoon makes it muddy and dangerous.
