Fatehpur has the most authentic feel — less restored than Mandawa/Nawalgarh. Many havelis are locked but the chabi-wala (key-holder) lives nearby.

Mandawa has the highest concentration of painted havelis. Murmuria, Goenka, Jhunjhunwala havelis have the best frescoes.

Most painted havelis are locked. The keys are with specific families who live nearby.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
Ask at the nearest shop for the 'chabi-wala' (key-holder). For ₹50-100 they unlock private havelis with the most extraordinary paintings — the ones no tourist sees.
Allow 90 minutes minimum. The roof and turret terraces are the right photograph — the murals there were never lime-washed and retain original 1902 pigment. Best light 10-11am and 3-4pm. Free guide pamphlet in English at the ticket desk; ₹100 camera fee well spent. Avoid Sundays (Marwari family gatherings clog the rooms).
Visit during one of Le Prince's seasonal artist-residency exhibitions (Nov-Feb) — the contemporary canvases hung against the 1802 frescoes are intentional dialogue, not decor. Ask the caretaker about Nadine's before/after photo book at the entrance counter. Two of the original mineral pigments (cobalt blue + lapis green) were re-imported from France because Indian sources had vanished after the 1930s collapse of Shekhawati fresco patronage.

Heritage hotel running since 1928, built by Rawal Madan Singh — Rajasthani-Indian restaurant called Badshah Pasand, supplied by an on-site organic farm and dairy with milk from indigenous Indian cows. Marwari, Kathiawadi and Sindhi horses still housed in the stables on the same property.
Tip: Time dinner around dusk — the lawn fills with peacocks at that hour and the buffet starts at sundown. The owners run horse-safari programmes; non-residents can book a riding-and-dinner combo.
Signature: candlelit Rajasthani dinner with folk performance
Multi-cuisine restaurant inside the Castle Mandawa heritage hotel — the most-visited stay in the Shekhawati haveli circuit. Mural-decorated dining hall plus a candlelit lawn dinner with fire-dancers and folk drums.
Tip: The lawn dinner with the fire dancer is a fixed-evening event — confirm at booking, not on arrival. Order the ker sangri specifically; it's the regional dish least often done well outside heritage kitchens.
Signature: Rajasthani thali with bajra roti
A small family-run restaurant on Goenka Chowk — the central haveli-lined square of Mandawa — Bungli has built a 4.9 Tripadvisor rating across 361 reviews on three things: bajra ki roti hand-rolled to order on a tava, ker sangri foraged from the surrounding desert (not packaged), and a Rajasthani thali plate at a quarter of what Castle Mandawa charges for the same regional menu. Open-courtyard seating in winter, single AC indoor room in summer.
Tip: Order the thali, not à la carte — the kitchen runs on set-plate efficiency. Ask for "bajra roti" specifically (not wheat); they'll bring two at a time as you eat. Pair with the malai-topped lassi which is the right finisher. Cash only; UPI sometimes works. Closed Tuesdays.
Signature: candle-lit haveli rooftop buffet
Heritage haveli built in 1890 by a Marwari jeweller, converted to a hotel near Sonthaliya Gate in Mandawa — the air-conditioned ground floor handles breakfast and lunch buffets, while dinner moves to the rooftop with candle-lit table service.
Tip: Dinner only on the rooftop — confirm whether the property has switched venues that evening (they do during winter wind events). Reasonable wine list compared to other Shekhawati haveli stays.

Castle commissioned in 1768 by Thakur Nahar Singh, still owned and run by the same Mahansar family — the property hasn't been re-built during conversion, so the restaurant sits in the original castle hall. Ranked #1 of 1 hotel in Mahansar on TripAdvisor (it's the only one).
Tip: Mahansar is small and dark at night — confirm the dinner-time slot when booking; the kitchen runs on a household schedule, not a hotel one.
