Atreyapuram is one of 6 villages where authentic Pootharekulu is made — the paper-thin sweet uses rice-starch sheets (5-7 microns thick) pressed against a hot brass plate, then layered with ghee + jaggery + cardamom + chopped dry fruits. GI tag granted Sep 2023 after a 12-year application. Walk-in to any home shop in the village (200+ producers) for ₹500-1200/kg. Best Nov-Feb when humidity is low and sheets crisp better.

WHERE TO EAT · 7 VERIFIED PICKS
Signature: Rajahmundry rose milk — chilled rose-flavoured buffalo milk
Rose milk is the drink Rajahmundry is famous for, and this Devi Chowk centre has been making it since 1950 — chilled buffalo milk from villages around the town, rose syrup, and little else. Seventy-five years on it is still the reference glass; locals and outsiders alike are sent here first.
Tip: The plain rose milk is the classic, but ask for the kova (reduced-milk) version for something richer. It is a stand-and-sip institution, not a sit-down café — quick, cheap, and worth the small detour to the original Devi Chowk address.
Signature: Andhra veg-and-non-veg multi-cuisine dinner spread
A multi-cuisine veg-and-non-veg restaurant that rates among Rajahmundry's most liked dinner spots — broad enough for mixed tables, doing Andhra meals, biryani and tandoori in one menu. It is the dependable family-dinner choice in town.
Tip: Good for groups where some eat veg and some do not — the kitchen covers both well. Best at dinner; book ahead on weekends.
Signature: Upma-pesarattu — the Andhra breakfast double act
An old-school coffee house in Rajahmundry whose upma-pesarattu — green-gram dosa wrapped around a ladle of upma — is a local breakfast favourite. It is the classic Andhra tiffin-and-coffee stop, the kind of place that anchors a town's morning routine.
Tip: Order the upma pesarattu, not a plain dosa — it is what regulars rate the place for. Breakfast is the meal here; pair with a tumbler of filter coffee.
Signature: Pure-ghee Andhra sweets — and a counter for pootharekulu
A well-regarded pure-ghee sweet shop in Rajahmundry — the practical place to buy pootharekulu, the gossamer rice-paper-and-jaggery sweet of the East Godavari delta, alongside the standard Andhra sweet range. A natural stop for a gift box before leaving town.
Tip: Pootharekulu is the regional sweet to carry home — buy it fresh here rather than at the station. Ask which batch is the day's; the rice-paper layers are at their best within a day or two.
Signature: Godavari river fish curry and Andhra biryani
A long-running family restaurant in Rajahmundry known for seafood — freshly caught Godavari river fish turned into Andhra curries and grills — alongside biryani. With its own brand presence in Hyderabad and Vizag, it is the town's reliable mid-range non-veg address.
Tip: Order the river fish curry — sourcing from the Godavari is the point of eating fish in Rajahmundry rather than anywhere else. Biryani is the safe non-fish option for the table.
Signature: Hot fresh idli and dosa, Udupi-style
A completely vegetarian Udupi restaurant that is consistently among the top-rated places to eat in Rajahmundry — hot, freshly made idlis and dosas at budget prices. It is the safe, cheap, well-run choice for a no-fuss South Indian meal in the town centre.
Tip: Order tiffin fresh off the griddle in the morning; the idli batch turnover is fast. Pairs well as a backup if Vijayamruth next door has a queue.
