The OLDEST Nilgiri hill station. Catherine Falls (250m). Toda tribal culture. Ooty's landscape with zero crowds. On peak Ooty weekends (50,000 visitors), Kotagiri has 50.
Two-stage waterfall plus a 4km-long forest reservoir, both 20km from Ooty in the shola-grassland belt. The Pykara Falls upper deck is at 2,000m altitude; the lower deck is a 700m walk down a stepped trail (allow 30 min round-trip). The reservoir boathouse runs from 9am-5pm — TTDC pedal boat ₹250/30min, motorboat ₹150/head circuit. Combine with Sandynalla Forest Lodge view (5km away, no entry — Tamil Nadu Forest Dept resthouse, photographs only). Entry: falls ₹40, boathouse ₹40 + boat fee. Closed first Wednesday monthly for boat maintenance.
Two adjoining heritage sites tied to the founding of Ooty as a hill station. Stone House (1822) — the actual building on the Arts College campus, granite block construction with the original cellar; visits require Arts College permission at the gatehouse (Mon-Fri 10am-4pm, free, sign register). Sullivan Memorial Pettikadu (4km) — restored colonial bungalow with the Nilgiris Documentation Centre archive, period furniture, Toda artefacts, original Sullivan letters; ₹20 entry, open 10am-1pm and 2pm-5pm Tue-Sun, closed Monday. Combine both in a 2-hour heritage morning.

The dining room of the Savoy — a Taj-group (IHCL SeleQtions) heritage hotel that has stood in Ooty since 1829, making it one of the oldest hotels in the Nilgiris. The afternoon high tea on the lawns and the fireside dining are the closest thing Ooty has to a living colonial-era ritual, and the restaurant is open to non-resident diners.
Tip: You don't need to be a guest — non-residents can book the high tea and dinner. The lawn high tea (croquet optional) is the signature experience; sit indoors by the fireplace once the evening mist rolls in.

Ooty's most-cited fine-dining address — #7 of 142 restaurants on Tripadvisor with 1,100+ reviews. Set inside the King's Cliff heritage hotel on Havelock Road, it pairs a glass conservatory and a fireside indoor room with hilltop garden views. The roast lamb and old-world colonial-bungalow setting are the reason couples and families book ahead.
Tip: Ask for the fireside indoor table in the cold months and the glass-house conservatory on a clear afternoon — two completely different experiences in the same restaurant. Continental and the slow-roast lamb are the menu's strength; book ahead on weekends and during the April-June and Christmas peaks.
Signature: Kongunadu-style mutton biryani and kola urundai (Kongu meatballs)
The Ooty branch of Junior Kuppanna — the Kongunadu non-veg chain founded by Kuppanna and Rukmani in Erode in 1960. Ranked among Ooty's top 20 restaurants, it is the most reliable address in the town centre for authentic Kongu/Chettinad meat cooking — mutton biryani, kola urundai and nattu kozhi.
Tip: Located on Commercial Road just off Charing Cross; no on-site parking but a paid car park sits ~150m down the road. Mutton is the kitchen's strength — order the biryani and kola urundai. Breakfast kal dosa and idli are fresh in the morning.
Signature: Hyderabadi mutton dum biryani in jumbo portions
A long-running Walsham Road biryani house — one of Ooty's go-to addresses for pocket-friendly Hyderabadi dum biryani and Andhra cooking. Reviewers consistently flag the huge portions; the jumbo biryani is meant for a group.
Tip: Don't over-order — the jumbo biryani has defeated tables of seven. Lunch is the freshest biryani service. Cash-friendly and quick; good for a fast town-centre meal between sightseeing.
Signature: Wood-fired pizza in an 80s-themed Charing Cross cafe
The cafe attached to the long-standing Nahar group at Charing Cross — Ooty's most central sit-down spot for wood-fired pizza, burgers and pasta. The 80s-themed room and warm service make it a default family pick right on the Charing Cross roundabout.
Tip: It's right at Charing Cross — the most walkable cafe in town. Wood-fired pizzas are the order; come early evening before the dinner rush fills the room.
Signature: Butter chicken and Ooty-style mutton biryani
A long-running multi-cuisine restaurant on Coronation Avenue/Church Hill Road — a dependable mid-town option for North Indian, Chinese and biryani when you want a full sit-down meal away from the Charing Cross crowd. The soups and butter chicken are the dishes regulars come back for.
Tip: It's on Church Hill Road in the Pudumund area, a short way from Charing Cross — quieter than the town-centre spots. Soups and butter chicken are the standouts; portions are generous.
