Maharashtra's most remote hill station — a plateau at 1,200m in the Satpura range near the Gujarat border. Yashwant Lake, Lotus Lake, Machhindra temple, and pristine forest with zero commercialization. Feels like stepping back 50 years.
A cluster of 24 Hinayana + Mahayana Buddhist caves cut into Trirashmi hill 8km south of Nashik city — earliest dated 1st c BCE Satavahana, latest 3rd c CE. Cave 3 (Gautamiputra Satakarni's 124 CE inscription, the dynasty's longest Prakrit text), Cave 10 (Nahapana Kshaharata 105 CE inscription), Cave 18 chaitya (the architectural anchor — vaulted vihara with stupa). ASI-protected Group A. 20-min stepped climb from parking; ₹25 entry; open dawn-dusk. Skip Jul-Aug monsoon (slippery basalt steps).
A 1788 Peshwa-era temple built by Sardar Rangrao Odhekar at the spot where Ram, Lakshman, and Sita are believed to have stayed during their 14-year exile (per Ramayana's Aranya Kanda). The 24 m-high tower in black basalt + the namesake "Kalaram" (black Ram) idol date to the rebuild. On 2 March 1930, Babasaheb Ambedkar led the Kalaram satyagraha — Dalits demanded entry to the temple, sparking a 5-year nation-wide untouchability campaign that pre-dated the 1932 Poona Pact. Open 5am-9pm; free entry; closed-to-non-Hindus signage at gate (locally enforced loosely).

Parushram Kukkar's misal house in Panchavati — the purist's pick, famed for its Kala Masala (black-spice blend dry-roasted in-house). Run by son Kailas now. Less polished than Sadhana, sharper on flavour; the Nashik native's misal.
Tip: Breakfast 7-10am only — the tarri pot empties by noon. The Kala Masala is sold by the kilo as takeaway; ₹250/kg. Cash + UPI.

Panchavati's most-quoted sweet shop near the Kalaram Mandir — Nashik chiwda (a poha-based mixture seasoned with curry leaf + green chilli, distinct from Bombay chiwda) is the takeaway souvenir. Pilgrims walk from Ramkund to here for tilkun ladoos.
Tip: Buy chiwda in 250g packs (₹80); seals well for travel. Tilkun ladoos are seasonal (December-January, Makar Sankranti). Cash + UPI.

Sadhana invented the 'chulivarchi misal' style in 1962 — matki usal cooked on a wood-fire chulha that gives a distinct smoky flavour absent from gas-stove misal. Mud walls, village-style seating, garden under neem trees. The Nashik misal everyone else copies.
Tip: 30 minutes north of Nashik city on the Pimpalgaon-Wani highway — a real day trip, not a city stop. Lunch 12-3pm is when the wood fire is hottest; afternoon batch is weaker. Cash + UPI.

India's first commercial wine producer — Rajeev Samant founded Sula in 1999 on his ancestral Gangavhare farmland, 30km west of Nashik. The estate tasting room pairs Sula's flagship wines with Mediterranean small plates. SulaFest in February is India's premier wine festival.
Tip: Vineyard tour ₹500 with 5-wine tasting; book online 48 hours ahead (slots fill weekends). Soulful Brunch Sat-Sun 11am-3pm at ₹1850 with unlimited Sauv Blanc. Bring govt ID for tasting. Cards + UPI.
