India's spiciest cuisine and 10,000 palatial mansions with Burma teak and Italian marble
Why Special
The palatial mansions of the Nattukotai Chettiars — 65 villages with extraordinary homes built from Burma teak, Italian marble, Belgian crystal, and handmade Athangudi tiles (found nowhere else). 10,000+ mansions. The richest cuisine in Tamil Nadu — Chettinad chicken and prawn are India's most replicated but nowhere as authentic as here. Tamil Nadu's most Instagrammable non-temple destination.

The stay decisions worth flagging in Chettinad.
No international hotel chain (Taj, Oberoi, Marriott, IHG) operates in Chettinad proper. All picks are independent heritage properties or boutique family-run hotels. CGH Earth's Visalam is the closest to a branded, systemised operation. April is deep summer in Tamil Nadu—daytime temperatures run 38-42°C. Every property here is better October-February. If you're coming in April, confirm that swimming pools are operational and book rooms with AC confirmed in writing.
The Bangala at ₹7-10k/night and Visalam at ₹8-12k/night both outperform Chettinadu Mansion (₹3-5k) on staff depth and food quality, but the concrete reason to spend ₹5-7k more per night at either is the cooking program: The Bangala's kitchen has a William Dalrymple endorsement and multi-day master classes; Visalam adds a CGH Earth-managed structure with predictable service standards and a pool that's actually maintained. Chettinadu Mansion gives you the same Athangudi tiles and bullock cart nostalgia at half the price—if you're self-sufficient and don't need guided programming, the gap doesn't earn its keep. If food is the point of the trip, pay it at The Bangala.
The Bangala
We pick The Bangala over Visalam because the kitchen is the reason to be in Chettinad at all. This is the first heritage hotel in the region, still family-run, and William Dalrymple wrote in the Financial Times that the food deserves a Michelin star. The cooking master classes are not a hotel add-on—they run as a standalone program with generations-old recipes. Visalam is better managed operationally; The Bangala is better if the meal on the banana leaf at lunch is the memory you're after.
Chettinadu Mansion – An Authentic Heritage Palace
At ₹3-5k/night in Kanadukathan, this is the only sub-₹5k property in the dossier with a pool, an in-house museum, bullock cart rides, cooking demos, and a sari-weaving center 200m away. Tripadvisor's Best Value ranking for the area is consistent with what reviewers actually describe. The trade-off versus The Bangala (₹4-7k more per night) is real: rooms in the heritage wing require a 10-minute walk to facilities, maintenance varies by section, and the 4-6am temple songs will wake light sleepers.
No location pick here that's worth the flag. See alternatives below.
Saratha Vilas Chettinad Palace Hotel
A 45,000 sq. ft. early-1900s merchant mansion restored by two French architects—Michele and Bernard—who still run it and live on the property. Eight rooms only. That owner-operator ratio is why the March 2025 reviews read differently from the others in this region: guests describe custom birthday arrangements, specific antique explanations by the owners, and a gift shop stocked with textiles and folk art the owners sourced themselves. The cooking lessons happen in a dedicated teaching kitchen, n
