Bhaderwah — India's lavender capital (Aroma Mission).
CSIR-IIIM Jammu launched its lavender pilot here under the CSIR Aroma Mission in 2018; by 2022 Bhaderwah was supplying ~1,500 litres of lavender oil annually. PM Modi mentioned the Bhaderwah "Purple Revolution" in Mann Ki Baat. ~2,500 farmers now cultivate lavender across the Doda belt — the model the wider Kashmir lavender expansion was scaled from.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
The economics are the story: farmers who switched a hectare from maize to lavender saw net annual income rise from ₹40,000-60,000 to ₹3.5-6 lakh. CSIR-IIIM has installed ~50 distillation units (45 fixed + 5 mobile) across J&K and distributed 30+ lakh free lavender saplings. Peak bloom is mid-June to early July — fields turn violet for ~3 weeks. The annual Lavender Festival at Bhaderwah is now a fixture (usually first week of June). Distillation units near the town fields are visitable on appointment; small-batch lavender oil sells locally for ₹4,000-8,000 per 30ml.
