The vast lake where 100-foot snake boats race every August in front of 200,000 spectators. Outside race season, it is a peaceful lake for kayaking and sunset watching. The starting point for most houseboat cruises.

Rice paddies 1-2m below sea level. UN-FAO heritage site. Canoe through flooded fields. See farming that defies physics. The real backwater story, not the tourist one.
Granite seated Buddha statue dating to the 9th-10th century AD, one of the few Buddhist relics surviving in Kerala (the state was Buddhist before the 11th-century Hindu revival). The left half of the statue is missing — local tradition says a mahout's tusker pulled it down in the 1500s. ASI-protected since 1965; open dawn-dusk; no entry fee. The setting is unguarded — a small thatched roof shelters the statue beside the canal, 2 min walk from the autorickshaw drop. Combine with a houseboat ride that passes Karumady village on the Pampa river route.
Founded AD 427 according to Syrian Christian tradition — the oldest Christian church in Kerala (predating Goa's San Thome by 1100 years). Rebuilt multiple times; the current Indo-Portuguese stone-and-laterite structure dates to 1864. Houses a 350-year-old painting of the Virgin Mary brought by Portuguese missionaries, a teakwood altar with gilt panels, and a granite stone slab inscription in Old Malayalam recording the founding. The Moolam boat race (June/July) starts from the church-front jetty; boats are blessed here before competing. Mass Sundays 7am Malayalam / 9am English / Tuesdays Novena. Open 7am-7pm daily; modest dress required for entry.

The Alappuzha branch of the worker-cooperative Indian Coffee House — a Mullackal Road institution near the boat jetty, seating around 100 with a separate family section. South Indian breakfast staples, fluffy appam and the signature strong filter coffee, served the unchanging ICH way.
Tip: A cheap, reliable breakfast or tea-time stop before the morning houseboat departures from the jetty. Order appam with the curry of the day and a filter coffee. Cash preferred.

A spacious, well-known multi-cuisine restaurant in the heart of Alappuzha city — one of the town's most popular sit-down options with both travellers and locals, around 4.0 on TripAdvisor across thousands of reviews. Strong on Kerala-style seafood, especially the Alleppey fish curry, plus Indian, Chinese and Continental pages. A second outlet sits on NH-47 at Kommady.
Tip: The non-veg Kerala meals are the pick — locals describe them as homely. Skip the dosas, which are weaker. Open early to late (around 7.30am-9.45pm), so it works for breakfast through dinner.
Signature: Chicken biryani — often called the best biryani in Alleppey
A bustling Mullackal Road biryani-and-Arabic house in central Alleppey, Halais is the town's go-to for biryani — reviewers repeatedly call it the best in Alleppey — alongside Indian, Chinese and Arabic dishes at reasonable rates. It is a locals' favourite for an everyday biryani-and-shawarma dinner.
Tip: Go for the chicken biryani and a shawarma plate; the Arabic side is stronger than the Chinese. It is a busy, casual room — quick service, polite staff. Cash and UPI.
Signature: Chicken puffs and bakery snacks from the Kerala bakery chain
A branch of KR Bakes, a Kerala-and-Tamil-Nadu bakery chain with around a dozen outlets. In Alleppey it is an everyday tea-time stop for chicken puffs, cutlets, cakes and bakery snacks — the cheap, fast option for a snack before or after a houseboat trip.
Tip: Treat it as a grab-and-go bakery rather than a sit-down meal — the puffs and cutlets are freshest in the late afternoon. Cash and UPI.
Signature: Meen pollichathu — fish cooked spicy in a banana-leaf wrap
Widely named the best all-round restaurant in Alleppey town — a place equally popular with locals and travellers for Keralan seafood and Arabic-leaning bites. The kitchen handles both sea and backwater fish, and the meen pollichathu is the dish reviewers come back for. Originally on Mullackal Road, it has since moved to the canal side next to the YMCA.
Tip: There is a downstairs hall and a plusher AC room upstairs — same menu, same prices. Order the meen pollichathu for the banana-leaf fish and the podimeen fry as a side. A meal runs roughly ₹150-250.
