# Munnar in October — the window after the monsoon
Munnar in October scores 5/5. It is the single best month of the year on our Western Ghats grid — the post-monsoon clarity window that makes every other Munnar month compare badly.
Verdict: Go. Book October 10–25 if you want the cleanest weather and lowest crowds.
Here's what October does for Munnar.
The Southwest Monsoon in Kerala typically ends in the last week of September. By the first week of October, the ground is dry but the vegetation is at maximum saturation — tea leaves are thick, cardamom pods are swelling, the air is clean because four months of rain has washed the dust off every leaf in the cardamom hills.
Temperatures are 15–25°C day, 10–15°C night. This is the only month of the year Munnar feels like a temperate European hill station rather than a south-Indian one. You'll need a jacket for the Top Station sunrise drive (05:30 departure, 07:00 arrival, first light behind Kolukkumalai).
Tea-estate trails are walkable again. The July–September monsoon closes most of the private estate walks because the leech load and landslide risk are too high. By October, leeches are gone with the wet season, trails have dried, and estates like Lockhart, Tata, and KDHP reopen their visitor programs.
Eravikulam National Park (home to the Nilgiri Tahr) is closed Feb–April for calving; it reopens by October. The Rajamalai section is drivable, the Tahr are active in the cooler weather, and the Neelakurinji flower (blooms only once every 12 years) was last out in 2018 — note that there is NO bloom in 2026 and won't be until 2030.
Tea estate homestays are at 60–70% occupancy rather than the 90–100% of December. Dreamcatcher Plantation, Parakkat Nature Hotel, Blanket Hotel — all have availability at ₹6,000–10,000/night mid-range.
Cardamom and black pepper harvests are underway. The pepper vines (wrapped around erythrina trees) are ripe black. Cardamom ground-pickers are out in the plantations. If your trip includes a plantation visit with a farmer (Tata's estate tours are the most accessible), October is when the harvest is visible.
Roads from Kochi airport (COK) to Munnar are reliable in October. The 130km drive takes 4 hours via Neriamangalam — the monsoon landslide-prone stretches have been cleared. NH-85 is paved and well-maintained to Adimali, then hill road for the final 25km.
Weather caveat: the northeast monsoon can bring thunderstorms in the second half of October (through November). If you're visiting in the last week, morning activities are safer bets than afternoons.
Photography windows: sunrise 06:15, sunset 18:00. Tea-estate-at-dawn light lasts until 07:30. Evening sidelight on the rolling plantations is best 17:00–18:00.
